   Artistic Approach

Jean-Luc Verna, Le Greffon, 2000
Transfer on paper with crayons and make-up
32 X 22,5 cm
"Jean-Luc Verna displaces and shades high and popular culture off. He draws histories old as the world in black; he cuts, puts up and joins together myths and child's illusions. He enlarges his drawings using a photocopier and transfers them on the wall with old paper and veil. Then the artist puts make-up on those drawing from memory.

Tattooed from top to toe, he has been photographed in poses associated with art glories and rock legends.

He draws on from high genre to the ordinary to engender hybrids and stage fabulous characters, bony fairies, super heroes, Siouxie, Niko and others. Flies, funeral wreath, skulls, candelabra, magic wand and stars are more then accessories. Everything gets wicked for the Paramour, permanent theatre, point of view and anaemic image of our world. The End framed with skulls doesn't stop the projection. Endlessly, Jean-Luc Verna plays with our souvenirs, search in the folds of our body and of our memory, up to the surface the ghost appears. With a subtle touch of free powder to fading smells, he flatters the soul, abolishes the limits and transposes the unreality into familiar visions."

"Body : Drawing is in fact the backbone of my life. I sculpt myself, I've put on make-up since the age of 13.

I aspire for an absolute beauty that is connected to the cosmos. That's why I relate to altering the body: tattoos, piercings, makeup.

I don't do it to shock people. In mingling with punks, I adopted their pose, their grandeur, their elegance and their beauty. I was inspired by the explosion of these finesses.

I'm not a total fashion victim."
