Both the installation and the drawings [Magical Mexican Beans at ART&IDEA in New York] convey an ambiguous message of harsh reality and glorious fantasy.

Guzmàn creates parallel worlds that can be interchanged by free and sometimes freaky association. He works in series and stylistically combines precise abstraction with expressive figuration and little text pieces reminding of comic strips gone wild. The relationships between sexuality and violence, hate and love, passions and obsessions are being redefined in a chaotic and magical world.

Statement for This Is Where I Belong, work shown at the 3rd Biennale de Montréal 2002
by Daniel Guzmán

"In my last drawing installations I have tried to resume in concrete exhibition spaces, different series of drawings developed in very diverse moments and circumstances. They go from newspapers cut outs to the appropriation of images and texts from diverse sources, as music and literature.

It is how this new installation named This Is Where I Belong, takes many of these strategies and personal preoccupations in regards to the use of drawing and the extension of it, in its capacity to get involved with other people, spaces and ideas.

In this occasion I count with the participation of my nephews (Juan Carlos, Miguel Angel, Edgar y Omar), for the elaboration of the main part of this work, a kind of imaginary tree, in whose traces of branches we inhabit, to speak about what we live, want, see and imagine. The different ways of showing this place to where we belong.

This is how I see drawing, as a natural extension of my persona in my encounter with the world that surrounds me, playing with its different ways of expression.

Finally, but not less important, this drawing installation is a kind of personal and intimate homage (starting from the title of the work) to a rock band that I like very much and that I think shares with me this kind of fraternal love for the simple and everyday things of life, THE KINKS.
